Social protection and insurance

Foreign students are entitled to the same rights as French students

The efficiency of the French social protection system is widely acknowledged.
Here is a few basic notions to explain medical cover and the various types of insurance.
  • Student social security (for students aged 28 and under): covers partial reimbursement of medical expenses (doctors' consultations, treatment, hospitalisation, medicine etc.) (70% on average),
  • Complementary health insurance, commonly known in France as mutuelle: supplements the student social security reimbursement (to almost 100%),
  • Civil Liability insurance: protects students if they are responsible for an accident.
  • Repatriation insurance: covers repatriation expenses (in case of death).
