Introduction

 In 1907, the city of Toulouse generously assisted its seven century old university in the creation of an institute dedicated to teaching and research, the Institute of Electrotechnology and Applied Mathematics of the University of Toulouse.

 Its principle goals were to train the engineers and managers necessary for the hydraulic and electric renovation of the southwest region and to contribute to the technological development of these scientific disciplines.

The increasing number of students and technical progress led to the creation of the Electrical Engineering and Hydraulics Departments in 1955 followed, in 1956, by the Electronics Department and in 1959, for the first time in a French engineering school, a Department of Applied Mathematics. In 1967, it became the Department of Computer Science.

 Today presided over by Professor Alain Ayache, the school is structured into 5 departments : Electrical Engineering - Automation, Electronics - Signal Processing, Computer Science - Applied Mathematics, Hydraulics - Fluid Mechanics, Telecommunications - Networks and 5 research labs which are closely linked.

 Complementing this core are 7 specialized training programs (Mastères Spécialisés de la Conférence des Grandes Ecoles) , a Continuing Education annex, and 12 doctoral disciplines.

Campus

Close to the Pyrenees, between the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea, not far from numerous lakes and moutains, Toulouse is a privileged location for sport: skiing, sailing, or just walking. The " Ville Rose ", the nearby bastides, both offer original and inviting architecture.

 As the second largest student center in France, the city enjoys a reputation for its dynamism and cultural activities such as theater, bel canto, several independent film venues, and galleries where young directors and artists can present their work.

All important cultural exhibits come to Toulouse which has created internationally known shows such as the SITEF (International Future Technology & Energy Show). It is also the capital of the Aerospatial Industry and future technology such as electricity and electronics, computer science, automation, materials, fluid mechanics and structures.

Toulouse boasts 120,000 students (15% of the population) divided principally among four universities and 10 " Grandes Ecoles " (National Superior Institutes) with 7,000 researchers in 250 laboratories It is a well-known technopole, a veritable center of brainpower which is developing the technology of tomorrow in its universities and the most modern industries found there: EADS, Alcatel Espace, CNES, Matra, Motorola, Rockwell France, Siemens, Storagetek, Thomson, etc. – Caravelle, Concorde, Airbus, Ariane, and Spot were all conceived and created in Toulouse.

Training Courses of each Department

Electrical Engineering – Automation

Without electricity the world would be lethargic, without automation, it would be paralyzed. In fact, this field covers in entirety the modern processes of generation, utilization, and control of electrical energy which are indispensible for all domestic and industrial activity.
Thanks to a wide variety of coursework in electrical engineering, electronics, automation, and industrial and scientific computing, students will be able to participate in the development of this rapidly expanding field which includes transportation, electrical propulsion, electrical networks for industry, vehicules, space, electrical control of machines, robotics, automation of industrial processes, etc.

Electronics - Signal Processing

The electronics engineer processes signals in electrical form, ensures their propagation and conceives adequate dispositives. His investigatory field concerns semi-conductors and micro-electronic components, signal processing, data processing, electronic systems, hyperfrequencies, telecommunications, and networks. Coursework affords students an overview of all industrial sectors where electronics is omnipresent.

Computer Science - Applied Mathematics

Teaching is based on coursework in advanced mathematics in order to approach the problems of applied mathematics as well as to instill a solid foundation in analysis and reasoning which are the bases of modern, intelligent computer science.
All advanced computer techniques are introduced from the first year, including software engineering, communication systems and networks, artificial intelligence, and production. This method of teaching trains a general engineer who is later capable of pursuing a career in research, analysis, development, or exploitation.

Hydraulics - Fluid Mechanics

Coursework is based on fluid mechanics and the various problems of transfer, in addition to mechanics, thermics, energetics, and computer science. It is one of the most in-depth programs in France.
Professional opportunities include hydraulics and environmental engineering (community water service, hydraulic renovation/refurbishing, basin management) as well as those fields where transfers involving the movement of fluids come into play (aeronautical and space industries, automobiles, naval hydrodynamics, nuclear and petroleum energy, turbomachines, and combustion).

Telecommunications – Networks

This department was created in 1999 to respond to the exponential growth of the industrial demand for engineers trained in the wide area of Telecommunications and Networks.
The Telecommunications-Networks department was born from the partnership of two others departements of the school : electronics - signal processing and computer science - applied mathematics.

Research, strength of ENSEEIHT

A Productive and Innovative Research Center

400 researchers, 90 engineers, technicians and administrative personnel, 250 students enrolled in the doctoral programs of the four research laboratories of the school which are linked to the five departments as well as the laboratories of the INPT, pursue research in the following areas:
Electric actuators, automation, production, micro-electronics, artificial intelligence, software, image processing, microwaves, networks, robotics, power electronics, biomechanics, captors, instrumentation, parallel architecture, the environment, turbulence, combustion, signal processing, porous media, digital computing, digital commands, fluidics, thermics, vision by calculator.
Industrial contacts are very close and research contracts provide almost three quarters of the funds necessary for the functioning and equipping of the laboratories. Numerous patents and trademarks have been deposed and new companies created based on research results.
These laboratories also contribute to the school’s research efforts.

Our n+i proposal

You will find some more specific details about what we offer within the n+i Programme.

Studies
French students enter in College of Engineering after two preparatory years (Y1, Y2) and then spend three years (Y3, Y4, Y5) in the College to get the “Diplome d’Ingenieur” (Official Master’s Degree in Engineering).
After the basic French language threshold skill-getting period (PIL, namely Periode d'Intégration Linguistique) and the adaptation semester (PIM namely Période d'Intégration Méthodologique), n+i students can join the sophomores (Y4 students). They will thereby complete the second and third years along with their French counterparts.
Here are some essential features related to the courses:
- the number of students within each department is approximately 70, which allows for a close relationship between the students and their lecturers
- course attendance is compulsory
- the time spent in the college is approximately 25 hours a week
- the overall programme includes lectures, workshops, experiments, tutorials and vocational training
- each course is assessed by means of an examination
- at the end of the academic year, a board of examiners makes a final decision as to whether a student can be promoted to Year 5. For this his overall marks should be 12 out of 20.

Vocational training
Training sessions either in corporations or laboratories are of the utmost importance for a future engineer. Therefore, like any of their French counterparts, n+i students have to attend such sessions.
- a 6-week or 2 month-session at the end of Year 4 (from mid June to mid August)
- a 5/6-month session during year Y5 (from March  to September)
A vocational training office (Service des Stages) can help the students find a place for their training sessions but they are supposed to show some degree of autonomy and initiative to manage by themselves.
Corporations will usually pay the students for the longer session (Year 5). The amount depends on the corporation but on average it is 1000 euros a month. This is a means for these students, French and foreigners alike, to pay for their studies. It is possible for those who want to read for a PhD to carry out this training session in a research laboratory.

The in-between Year (Année de Césure)
It is possible to spend a full year in a corporation between Years 4 and 5. It is called ‘Année de Césure.’ The corporation pays the trainee engineer who remains enrolled at the college (the pay varies). If the work carried out during this year is scientifically and technically meaningful, it can become the basis for a report and an oral presentation and can thus be validated as a Year 5 training session. Thus in order to complete his/her course and get his/her diploma in February, the student will only have to have the first semester of Year 5 validated. This is certainly a good way to provide for one’s own studies. Contacts can be made through the vocational training office (Service des Stages) but the student will have to give evidence of his/her skills to the corporation so as to persuade them to take him/her on.

Pedagogical support
n+i students can take advantage of some specific support:
- from the head of n+i
- from a fellow tutor (student)
- from a teaching tutor (lecturer)
- and generally speaking from all the college services involved in the students’success : International Relationship, the Vocational Training Office (Service des Stages), Accountancy, Studies Support (Service de la Scolarité)

If they wish, some specific workshops can be organised for some groups of n+i students.
As far as the command of the French language is concerned - which is a key condition for the final success of the scheme - a full week of intensive practice is organised at the end of January when n+i students join the college after the adaptation semester. A weekly four-hour course is then provided for n+i students.

Research
As mention before, Research is something important at ENSEEHIT.
The courses draw upon it. The students who wish to take up a research career will be welcome in the College Laboratories. They will also find topics either in the field of theoretical research or in the field of industrial and technological research. In year 5, by attending a few extra lectures, the students will be able to get a Master’s Degree in research as well as their degree in Engineering, which is a good way to begin preparing a PhD. They can also carry out their 5-month-training session within a Laboratory as a preparation for their future dissertation.

Reading on for a PhD depends on the capacity to obtain the required financial support as well as the agreement of a professor, fully qualified for the support of (PhD) students.

Professional Network
Many contacts exist between the school and industry, as far as both teaching and research are concerned. Therefore, representatives from various companies are members of the School Council and committees. Industrialists lend their support in technological education. They intervene in this role by :
  • teaching in specialized 3rd year courses
  • presenting technical conferences or leading seminars in their respective fields
  • organising training periods in companies
  • helping students discover their businesses and the careers they offer, open houses, the Forum, student-company meetings, and sponsorship.
The school’s research laboratories are solicited by business to :
  • perform contract studies
  • accomplish joint studies under the sponsorship of a technical ministry
  • sponsor thesis work in business through CIFRE contracts
  • validate their research activities, encourage the transfer of technology and assist in the creation and development of new companies.
Through its Continuing Education program, the school organizes courses from which businesses benefit. Industry also supports the school financially through the Apprenticeship Tax for middle and upper level management.

Scholarships

ENSEEIHT has no particular scholarship to offer.

For excellent students we use to propose them to EIFFEL scholarship, and we can get generally one EIFFEL scholarship per year! But we recall that it\'s an extremely selective kind of scholarship, so it\'s very exceptional to get it.

We also have some industrial partners, and try to find a financial support for our n+i students, but it is not always possible.

Think to use loan, help of relatives ...

After some months of stay in France and a good functionning of the bank account, it \'s also possible to borrow money.  

Tuition

Expenditure

With the exception of the students coming under a special scheme (agreement with their own university or industrial companies) the average fees for n+i students are 3,000 euros for two years. This includes schooling expenses, National Health Service and a wide range of facilities offered to n+i students (reception, accommodation booking, tutorials, French course…)
You need to remember that the overall cost of an academic year for a trainee engineer amounts to 15,000 euros to be supported by the State Budget. It ensures that a student paying 2,000 euros is in fact granted a scholarship of 13,000 euros by the French State! This should be borne in mind if compared with the facilities offered by other countries.
Students with an Eiffel Grant only have to pay 500 euros for the French course.
Studying in a College of Engineering is exacting. One should not contemplate taking up a job, even if part time, to cover one’s expenses.
Various subsidies can be obtained to support either totally or partially one’s studies.

Student Life

Student life

The Association of the Student of the School is basis of the extra academic life in the school ! Many activities are proposed through different clubs (for culture, sport, TV, movie, theatre ..). These clubs give also the opportunity to invest you with the management of them, and to build many relationships with the other students and the staff of the school. For foreigner students it’s an excellent way to integrate themselves in the school community and to speak French intensively. So it is highly recommended to participate in theses activities.
Three major events occur during the year : the Festival N7, the ski week (more than 600 students participate) and the Spring of Students.

Another important association is the Junior Enterprise as an introduction the business activity.

Accommodation

Reception and accommodation

N+I students are welcomed at the railway station or airport as soon as they arrive in Toulouse.
They are taken to their accommodation and helped to settle in. So far, we have been able to get a room in a Students’Hall of Residence for each of our n+i students, which is very lucky since finding a place in Toulouse proves very difficult. The average monthly rent for a single room (including washing facilities) is 130 euros. Like their French peers, foreign students can claim a special benefit called APL (Aide Personnalisée au Logement) which reduces the cost of the rent. Some of the Halls of Residence are sometimes old. A huge refurbishing scheme is in process and the renovated rooms (slightly more expensive) boast an Internet connection. However, only a few new students get this type of room on arrival. One usually has to wait for a while and be patient!
Those who wish to can opt for another type of accommodation (privately owned places, shared flats, etc.). Of course they will have to fend for themselves since the college will be of no avail in this respect.

Accommodation fees

The average cost of living for a student in France can be evaluated at 800 euros per month (including accommodation).
Students can benefit of many special prices for transport, cinema, …
For accommodations, see the previous text for the rate. The basic rooms in Hall of Residence are quite small (around 9 square meters). Some are bigger and built again with many commodities. The number of these renovated rooms is increasing, but up to now it remains difficult to get one. Students must be patient!
It’s also possible to rent a apartment in the private sector. It’s more expansive (around 350 euros for a two roomed flat) and you have to pay electricity, insurance .. and to have a person “garant” which is very difficult to find. You can also rent a flat with some other student(s).

Partnership with n+i

N+i partner

Our school was among the first partners of n+i. We are deeply involved in all innovation proposed by n+i and  an important partner also in terms of recruitment.

Our Director, Prof Alain Ayache is now the President of the n+i Netwotk which is the proof of our leading part in this Program.

Affiliations

We have many agreements with foreign institutes (for example with Georgia Tech). But a stay in these Universities is not possible for our n+i students for the following reason : to get the "Diplome d'Ingénieurs" two years in a accredited Engineer School are compulsory. 

Moreover,  the interest to study in France is to be merged into the french Education system!
