More than 100 years of success

The Ecole Spéciale des Travaux Publics, du Bâtiment et de l’Industrie (ESTP) was founded in 1891 as a private higher education institution and officially recognized by the State in 1921. The ESTP is habilitated to award national diplomas and degrees by the Ministry of Higher Education and Research and accreditated to award the engineering degree “diplôme d’ingénieur” by national authority “Commission des Titres d’Ingénieurs”.

Since November 1999, the non-profit-making association ESTP is closely associated with another, state-owned, French « Grande Ecole d’Ingénieurs » : Arts & Métiers ParisTech

In 2010, the ESTP joined the higher education & research centre (Pôle de Recherche et d’Enseignement Supérieur) : Université Paris-Est

In France, the ESTP has the biggest student flow for the construction industry and has made its reputation as THE “Grande Ecole” for professionals in this area, in all its aspects: design, planning & development, construction, project management, rehabilitation, maintenance, facilities & real estate management, …with an emphasis on sustainable development, new materials, energy efficiency, health issues, saving of natural resources, …

Created in 1903, the campus of ESTP includes all necessary installations for all the courses and practical work. This is where the students can find the laboratories and drawing rooms, the computer centre, the library, the sports center and student housing (for those who wish to live on campus).

The campus is 15 minutes from central Paris by RER (Regional Express Network).

A training in excellence for managers of engineering with international ambitions

The ESTP is part of the French network of institutions specialized in Engineering education "Réseau n+i". Members of this network cooperate to promote their programmes abroad, to recruit foreign students via a common admission procedure, to offer a joint first semester in the different  areas of engineering. Foreign students with a bachelor or a master's degree may be admitted to French engineering degree programmes and obtain the French 5 year degree "diplôme d'ingénieur-master's degree" after 2 years of study. The foreign students may gradually adapt to the French system thanks to a semester of transition including an introduction to French methodology, a preparation in scientific and technological subjects, French language and culture. The ESTP organizes this period of adaptation in the field of civil engineering for students of all members institutions. After this common integration period, students join their institution and French fellow students for the normal course-work programme.

Syllabus of the semester of transition civil / building engineering

Before integrating the institution where they are admitted, "n+i" students follow a common "semester of transition" of a duration of 12 weeks, from September to December.

In 2010-2011, the semester of transition (or Package for Methodological Integration) in civil engineering is organized by ESTP, in Paris and includes following subjects :

    ECTS credits
Integration Seminar 1 day
Scientific Bloc
Strength of materials
94 hours
30 hours
64 hours
Technological Bloc
General construction
Pre-stressed concrete, reinforced concrete
Metall contruction
85 hours
15 hours

10 hours
30 hours
Cultural Bloc
French literature, history, geography, european Union
100 hours
70 hours

  279 hours 26

In January, ESTP organizes the transfer of the students to the institution where they are admitted. In their actual "Grande Ecole", they will complete a specific programme for another 4 credits counting for the semester of transition before integrating into classes for the 2nd semester with the French students.

Yang ZHOU from China

"I am very satisfied with the high level "n+i" programme. I especially appreciated the support given to us foreign students as regards the practical life as well as the studies that are greatly facilitated thanks to the semester of transition : an excellent introduction to studies in France."

Yi XU from China

"The semester of transition is about to end and I learned a lot in the past 4 months. Given our low knowledge of the French language, the French language courses that we followed enabled us to make quick progress. We also gained technical and specialized knowledge that are important for our orientation. We also got to know French history and culture which is a precious experience to live and study in France. In one word, I may say that this opportunity is really worth the while. My only regret is that the semester of transition is too short."

Li YAO from China

" After graduating in 2001 in architecture at Beijing Polytechnic University, I came to France in July 2001 thanks to the "n+i" programme in order to enroll for the French engineering degree. EDUFRANCE prepared everything for our arrival in a perfect way. Our accommodation was organized in the very pleasing surroundings of the Cité Universitaire Internationale de Paris. After the EPF/ESTP two month intensive French language course, I attended ESTP for the semester of transition in civil engineering. This transitory period is very important to adapt to the technical programmes : the atmosphere is very animated but also concentrated. The semester of transition lasted 4 months and enabled us to learn progressively the French terminology of our specialities. This period of transition, especially created for the "n+i" programme, facilitated enormously our adaptation, also thanks to the support we received for accommodation, transportation and administrative formalities. Next semester I will leave for another French Grande Ecole to get a degree with French fellow students. Through this effort my dream has come true."

Professional Network

All “Grandes Ecoles d’Ingénieurs” are distinguished by close links to industry. As an independent higher education institution, this is still more so the case for the ESTP:

  • 60 companies and professional organisations are members of the non profit making «Association ESTP» that runs the institution.

  • The main professional organisations and companies are represented on the different Boards of the ESTP: of Administrators, of Pedagogical Supervisors, of Examiners, … and participate actively in the constant up-dating of the contents of the programmes.

  • The same organisations and firms grant scholarships to the students and sponsor the various activities of the students’ union.

  • 85% of the teaching staff hold professional positions in private or public sector companies.

  • Most training programmes involve a combination of academic study and on-the-job training. At the end of each academic year, a compulsory internship, arranged with approved companies, brings the students into contact with the realities of the professional experience, in France or abroad.

  • Studies concerning the running of a firm (law, management, quality control, communication, English language…) form a complement to the technical training of the engineering degree course.

  • 80% of ESTP graduate engineers are employed in the civil and building engineering industries. 540 chartered engineers graduate each year from the ESTP, representing thus in France the biggest flow for the construction industry (18.000 professionally active alumni).

  • The alumni association of the graduate engineers, SID-ETP, maintains strong links with the ESTP.

  • The ESTP develops innovation & research projects in cooperation with companies. A certain number of doctoral students may be financed via a work contract (CIFRE) with a firm while carrying out their research activities.

  • About 1.400 adult professionals participate each year in Continuing Education programmes of the ESTP.
