The Ecole Nationale Supérieure de Cognitique (ENSC) is one of the five Engineering School of the Polytechnical Institute of Bordeaux (IPB). It has been created by a team of active professors and researchers working in the field of cognitive science in 2004.
Wikipedia: Cognitive science is the interdisciplinary scientific study of mind and its processes. It examines what cognition is, what it does and how it works. It includes research on how information is processed (in faculties such as perception, language, memory, reasoning, and emotion), represented, and transformed in behaviour, (human or other animal) nervous system or machine (e.g., computer).
Cognitics deals with the theories and tools used to solve problems in the field of cognitive science. The 3-years training program addresses both technical disciplins like computer science, signal processing or robotics and human and social sciences like cognitive psychology, knowledge management, ergonomics and human factors.
The conception of a complex helmet for helicopter pilots is a good example of the skills that are learned at ENSC. In order to determine the specifications of the helmet, it is necessary to define the usability of the product and to understand the limits and constraints of human vision, human attention, taking into consideration the relationships with other technical systems.
ENSC is located in the famous city of Bordeaux, France. The exact location is the Campus of Carreire very close to Pellegrin University Hospital. However, since we are rapidly growing, ENSC will move to the beautiful Campus of Talence in January 2013 in new buildings with much more space.
Important companies (Airbus, Thales ...) supported the creation of ENSC from the start in order to fulfill their strong need of people understanding human factors problems, computer science, human systems interactions and knowledge management. Since then, ENSC has been growing every year with many jobs opportunites in many different domains. More than 90% of the alumni have found a job corresponding to their skills six months after graduation.
ENSC has been allowed to deliver the French "diplôme d'ingénieur" in the domaine of "cognitique" by the Commission des Titres d'Ingénieur (CTI). ENSC last evaluation (2010) was one of the best evaluation of all engineering schools of Bordeaux.
In France there is only one engineering school in the domain of Cognitics: ENSC.
ENSC is the only French engineering school with a training program combining both technical fields and human sciences.
There is no problem to find companies accepting internships during the 3-years program and most students find a job very quickly after graduation. 3 examples:
- Information systems for clinical applications (creation of a new company)
- PhD on overload anticipation of aircrew attention (Thales)
- Knowledge organization and management for the MELISSA project (ESA / ESTEC)
Several companies are members of our Administration Council and participate to the definition of the training program. Moreover 2 associate professors from Thales are currently involved in the pedagogical team.
ENSC welcomes each year at least 10% of foreign students. However, this is the first year of our membership with the n+i network. Be the first to join us!
The recruitment for the next promotion generally starts in March and stops at the beginning of July.
For foreign students, there is an earlier procedure starting in november and finishing in May. Please contact Jean-Marc Salotti for more information.
As it is usually the case for French public institutes, the tuition cost is relatively low, about 590 Euros (without "sécurité sociale").
There are several campus in Bordeaux, Pessac and Talence with all student services: University restaurants, university libraries, swimming-pool, etc.
Bordeaux universities are famous for their quality of life. Two years ago, there was a call from the Ministère de l'Education Nationale for the reorganization of the campus in all French university regions. The Bordeaux project was ranked first.
There are university restaurants in the campus and several rooms are reserved for foreign students.
Moreover, on arrival at the airport, students can be picked up by the ENSC reception team, which can organize their venue.
Students housing respect French university standards.
Please contact Jean Marc Salotti for more information.
10% of foreign students graduate each year on average.
Several internships each year, 2 examples:
- Institute for Human and Machine Cognition (USA)
- European Science and TEchnology Center, European Space Agency, The Netherlands
Exchange agreements, 2 examples:
- Université Laval à Québec
- Université du Québec à Montréal
More than 60% of our students spend at least 3 months in a foreign country through internships or exchange agreements.
