Introduction

Ecole Nationale Supérieure d'Electricité et de Mécanique (ENSEM) is a Graduate Engineering school in Electrical Engineering, Mechanics, Computer Science and Automatics.

Founded in 1900, it is now one of the 7 engineering schools of "Institut National Polytechnique de Lorraine" (INPL). Since 2008, ENSEM and INPL are part Nancy Université, federation of the 3 universities of Nancy.

Ranked among the top 20 French engineering schools by major industrial groups and companies, ENSEM trains multi-scientists engineers who are among the most researched profiles in R&D offices of companies, including major national and international groups. Since 1900, it has trained over 6500 engineers who took important places in industry.

For over a hundred years ENSEM have evolved with the time by adapting its programs to the industry needs. Latest examples with the opening of two new curricula of specialization: the curriculum "Energy" launched in 2008 and the term "Autonomous systems and embedded technologies" opened in 2010.

The strong general education provided to ENSEM’s students in the three fields of engineering: Electricity, Mechanics, Computer science and Automatics, provides them competences which allow them to be immediately operational in positions of high responsibility in R&D offices of national and international companies. The domains of activities are too large as energy, security, transport, sustainable development, advanced technologies, engineering of large systems or the design of major projects.

n+  Mster degree

Highlights

-

-         ENSEM   is a Multiscientific school of engineers, it has a strong link with Research,  most of the teachers are also researchers and work in one of the five partners laboratories:

o      LORIA, Laboratoire Lorrain de Recherche en Informatique : deals with computer science and Communication. http://www.loria.fr

o      CRAN, Centre de Recherche en Automatique de Nancy : deals with  automatic control, signal processing, industrial and computer engineering. http://www.cran.uhp-nancy.fr/

o      GREEN, Groupe de Recherche en Électrotechnique et Électronique de Nancy : deals with electrical engineering, energy treatement, electric drives and superconductors. http://www.green.u-nancy.fr

o      LEMTA, Laboratoire d’Énergétique et de Mécanique Théorique et Appliquée : deals with  the rational use of energy, flow control, the thermomechanical behavior of materials, biomechanics ... http://www.lemta.fr

o      IECN, Institut Élie Cartan de Nancy: is one of the largest mathematics laboratories in France. A pool of excellence whose skills fuel the pedagogy of the school. http://www.iecn.u-nancy.fr/

-         ENSEM is a graduate engineers school which combines high level theoretic courses and practical activities in the different technological training

-         ENSEM has strong industrial relations.

The ENSEM's Student have too many activities outside the courses and sport activities, for example  :

Ø      Eco marathon shell association : Association of students and teachers dealing with new concept cars for international competition :  http://ensem-marathonshell.com/

Ø      Junior Company Association : Students organizations dealing contracts with companies as a consulting firm : http://www.ensemconseil.fr/

Professional Network

Relations with industry are clearly one of the strengths of the school. The school administrative board includes 35% of its members who are from industrial partners. The strategy of the School is thus adopted in full accordance with the needs of the industrial world.

During their training, engineering students are already in contact with industry through short courses or training at the end of study (6 months):

Ø      Project Graduation (October to March) Study conducted by an engineering student at the end of training. Level engineering students research and development

Ø      Industrial internship (5 to 6 months from early April to late August). Level engineering students research and development offices of ENSEM’s industrial partners;

Thanks to the direct contact with the companies ENSEM young engineers have the advantage of being immediately operational and able to evolve rapidly to positions of high responsibility.

Salary:

Registration

ENSEM has developed an international policy for years especially for student exchanges.

In order to increase the number of its international degree student, ENSEM has joined the "n+i" network in early 2011.

Important Dates

Admission to ENSEM is on file, which has previously been registered and validated on the n+i web site if possible to be followed by an interview on SKYPE

Direct admission procedure for all degrees starts in March.

The deadline to apply for an admission is set to the 30th of April.

The admission consists in two steps : admission on records and an interview (by phone for student abroad).

The admission is notified in June.

The academic year starts in early Septembre.

B2 level in French is required for such a direct admission.

Scholarships

The tuition fees for degree students are mostly taken in charge by the French government. There is therefore no scholarship for foreign students. Scholarship might be offered through the n+i.

Non European students

Scholarships are mainly available to students who seek to obtain a French diploma. Possibilities include scholarships granted by French embassies, the Lorraine Regional Council, the Agence Universitaire pour la Francophonie, the student’s country of origin, the Eiffel program, the Alban Program, the N+i program…). Applicants are expected to contact the funding organizations directly about the possibility of obtaining a grant.

The Erasmus Mundus Amase Master’s program offers around 25 scholarships (42,000 € for the two years) to excellent non-European candidates. For further information, consult the following website : www.amase-master.net

Partnership with n+i

ENSEM is recently part of the n + i, but it has long partnerships with a network of engineers schools in France such as the schools of Institut national Polytechnique de Lorraine or Institut  National polytechnique de Grenoble, or Institut National polytecnhique de Toulouse.  Theses three institutes gathers differnts engineers schools and constitute a special network.

Affiliations

ENSEM maintains close relations with some twenty foreign institutions and leads them with an active student exchange or internship year of training abroad, the School encourages students to experience this in one of the partner institutions.
