Introduction

The National School of Geology (Ecole Nationale Supérieure de Géologie - ENSG) in Nancy is a teaching and research institute concerned with geosciences at large and its interaction with the society's industrial and environmental activities. The increasing demand for sustainable natural resources and energy, the fast urban development concour to make graduates of the ENSG in high demand in the professional world.  The Graduate School of Engineering trains high level Executive and Science engineers who acquire a broad knowledge in geosciences : it is the only engineering school in France to offer this type of training.

ENSG has defined the following pathways of development at the Masters level, including both teaching and research:

Water Resource and Environment
Protecting and managing our natural environment are major challenges for our society. The Nancy engineering geologists work at an international level on the following issues:
  • Finding and managing water resources
  • Hydrologic systems
  • Protection of water tables
  • Water storage
  • Reclamation and rehabilitation of industrial and mining sites and of contaminated land
Mineral and Energetic Raw materials
Our engineering geologists are involved worldwide in the exploration for and exploitation of raw materials such as oil, gas, ore deposits, industrial minerals…
Graduates are at the forefront in the following fields :
  • Reservoir engineering
  • Oil, gas and mineral exploration
  • Processing of raw materials
  • Recycling and waste management
  • Strategic management of raw materials
Geotechnical Engineering
The role of the engineering geologist is crucial in the planning and execution of major building projects:
  • Dam and tunnel constructions
  • Highway foundations
  • Industrial and natural hazards
  • Mine subsidence, landslides
Numerical Modelling in Geosciences
The Nancy School of Geology has become one of the major centers of the three dimensional numerical modelling in Earth Sciences. The GOCAD software, created in Nancy during the 90's, is widely used in the hydrocarbon and mining industries. Graduates who specialise in numerical modelling find careers in:
  • 3D modelling of the geometry and formation of ore bodies and oil/gas reservoirs
  • Software development
  • Software project management
  • R&D

Master programs
In adition to the "Master in geological engineering" above, The Nancy School of Geology proposes several MSc degrees. These masters are currently the preferred entry point for foreign students at ENSG:

Facilities and scientific environment

The premises of the ENSG alone cover an area of 20 000 m2 (half of them brand new) in Vandoeuvre (Brabois and Pôle de L'Eau sites). Besides multi purpose classrooms and amphitheatres, it is endowed with specially equipped rooms for the teaching of microscopy, mapping, study of rocks, data processing, languages, and hosts one of the largest libraries in the country in the field of geosciences.
Courses are taught over a period of six semesters by lecturers and researchers from the ENSG and also by researchers from the CNRS (50 people), external lecturers from industries and universities (over 100 people). One of the singularities of our school is the emphasis on on-site practical work (7 weeks altogether) studying geological mapping, structural geology, sedimentology, magmatism and metamorphim.
The lecturers-researchers of the ENSG and the CNRS, the Ph.D students (about 400 people) carry out their research in the laboratories of the ENSG or several mixed units INPL-CNRS or Henri Poincaré University - CNRS. Laboratories belonging to the CNRS federated in the Earth Science Observatory OTELO and Mechanics, Energy and Process Research Federation.

The students of the ENSG profit by their research potential through training periods and practical works in the laboratories. Through their personal research projects, they have access to :
  • The computers and 3D modeling original softwares of the GOCAD Research Consortium (CRPG-ENSG),
  • The apparatus of physical and mechanical measurements in the laboratory of environmental and
  • geotechnical studies (LAEGO-ENSG),
  • The pilot plant of mineral and industrial waste treatment of the laboratory for environment and mineral processing (LEM-ENSG),
  • The analytical platform of OTELO, including state-of-the-art ion microprobes located at the CRPG-CNRS.
The main laboratories hosting student for their research projects are:
