General Presentation

Introduction

ESMISAB which is going to approach its 20 years existence is now very well known in industry despite of its apparent small size and promotions of about 50 students a year. This allows in this type of cursus a very close attention to our students (called 'élèves') who appreciate the very easy and opened communication with professors, technical and administrative personals, whatever their origin.

ESMISAB is a specialized Master Engineers Institute in Food, House and Health Products Safety, in full accordance with the European standards and obtention of so called ECTS credits ( Bologna Process ec.europa.eu/education/lifelong-learning-policy/doc48_en.htm).

Campus

ESMISAB is located within the prehincts of Brest-Iroise Technopole (www.mairie-brest.fr/cub/le_technopole_brest_iroise.htm)9 km away from Brest City Centre, nearby to 2 others Schools of Engineers (www.brest-metropole-oceane.fr/enseignement-superieur/grandes_ecoles.html): ENSTB (member of (N+i) too) and ENIB. These 3 Master level Engineer Schools account for about 2600 students on the Technopole, without counting other Institutes.

The Technopole is nearby the seaside (www.mairie-brest.fr/quartiers-brest/images/rive_droite/technopole.jpg)(farm2.static.flickr.com/1147/1337639727_2895beb41d.jpg) . It is equipped with a university restaurant for students. There is a private university residence (WIFI) just down ESMISAB and others in downtown for students to live there. Private lodging is easy to find in town at low rates (mid 300 €/month). Cost of life in Brest all included (without the cellular!) is about 550€/month.

There are regular connections with Brest (www.mairie-brest.fr/cam/) by city bus (www.bibus.fr/) and a lost of students share their car.
There are easy connections by TGV train or plane to Paris. Brest has recently rebuilt totally its international airport with its gigantic Manta ray looking terminal ( www.brest.aeroport.fr) and frequent flights either to Charles de Gaulles or Orly airports of Paris.

Highlights

ESMISAB main topics are microbiology, quality of products and safety of food, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals products. These centers of interest are directed related to research activities that contribute to tuition by providing significant material via their case studies and experience in expertise. Applications of microbiology (mycology included which is a uncommon specificity of ESMISAB) within the Food Industry constitute a pole acknowledged in technological research.
This context constitues the foundations of analytical skills and risk management tuition. This is emphasized also by the numerous links of ESMISAB with AFSSA the French National Agency for Food safety (www.afssa.fr/)and its European counterpart EFSA (www.efsa.europa.eu/).

Professional Network

EMISAB engineers are to be found primarily in food or linked with food industry (ie catering, additives..) either in medium sized companies very concentrated in the West of France ( first agricultural region of Europa) or near Paris or in large national and international companies as Diana Naturals, Danone, Fleury Michon, Herta, Kraft Foods, Lactalis, Marie Brizard, Sodhexo...

ESMISAB engineers with the commercial option find jobs easily in societies dealing for equipment and reagents for microbiological diagnostic as AES Chemunex..

Other Industries linked to cosmetics, pharmaceutical products or house products appreciate the adaptability and seriousness for ESMISAB engineers, for example Bio Mérieux, Johnson & Johnson, LVMH, Procter & Gamble, Yves Rocher...Engineers with some chemical background are even more appreciated.

Registration

ESMISAB has been welcoming (N+i) students since 2004, from 1 to 3,  each year.

Important Dates

ESMISAB got one EIFFEL scholarships every 2 years, again it shoud be in the previously mentioned axes our 'mother' university and with universities having a partnership with UBO (www.univ-brest.fr/).

Some figures

At the M1 level where you candidate, there is in ESMISAB a mean of 15% foreign students 'of all colours'. We have been welcoming since at least 10 years students from Algeria, China, Hungaria, Lebanon, Mexico, Morocco, Romania, Russia, Vietnam....

Knowledge of french at a minimal B1 level   is strongly recommanded before you leave your country so that you gain quickly the level B2 necessary to have an easier understanding of technical courses and find easily an internship in industry : this is especially relevant for those speaking a langage of non latin origin.

(en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Common_European_Framework_of_Reference_for_Languages)

95% of foreign students graduate, they enriche the perception of the World of our natives and integration is good in our 'somehow familial school'.

Partnership with n+i

ESMISAB has been member of (N+i) and receiving students from the alliance since 2004.

Affiliations

ESMISAB currently has 3 Erasmus exchange programs with Central Europa, and tights links so not formalized with Moroccco and Lebanon. Tunisia and Vietnam are on the way.

60% of ESMISAB students have an internship abroad at the M1 or M2 level, which increases again our international net of relations.

ESMISAB by its main laboratory LUBEM is also engaged in varied programs of research (www.univ-brest.fr/LUBEM/).
