The objective of the master is to provide to students with high technical and scientific competences suited to R&D in the domains of Material Sciences and Chemistry. General knowledge is provided in Inorganic Chemistry, Physical chemistry, Analytical chemistry, Organic chemistry at the undergraduate level. Then special focus is put on Material Sciences for Structural materials and for Energy or on Organic chemistry and petrochemistry at the Master level. ENSICAEN invests every year in professional equipements and softwares so as to provide up to date skills and competences.

At the M1 level, common courses deal with foreign languages & soft skills, science & engineering. Starting on the first semester, students have to choose between the two majors (or options): Material sciences or Chemistry (organic). Then during the second semester, they are also introduced to minors that are developed in M2, i.e. Materials for Energy, Materials for structures, Organic Synthesis, Petrochemistry & Refinery. Besides the courses, students have to carry out a research project in lab corresponding to two weeks full time work. From April to July (4 months minimum) students must go for an internship in a company or a lab abroad.

ECTS credits are only allocated to courses, each course consisting of several course units whose number of hours is specified.

In M2 : On the first semester (September-February), beside common education in foreign languages & soft skills, with special emphasis on the enterprise environment, scientific education is highly focused on minors introduced at the M1 level (and cited above). Then from March to July-august (5 to 6 months) students must go for an internship in a company.
