Social protection

The efficiency of the French social protection system is widely acknowledged.

Most French people are entitled to health, maternity, family, unemployment and retirement benefits.
Student social security is included in this overall system, which gives students access to social and health insurance.

A few basic notions to explain medical cover and the various types of insurance.
  • Student social security: covers partial reimbursement of medical expenses (doctors’ consultations, treatment, hospitalisation, medicine etc.) (70% on average),
  • Complementary health insurance, commonly known in France as Mutuelle: supplements the student social security reimbursement (to almost 100%),
  • Civil Liability insurance: protects students if they are responsible for an accident.
  • Repatriation insurance: covers repatriation expenses (in case of death).
