1. Passports and visas
You will need a passport valid until the end of your studies (except for European Union nationals) and a long stay
visa mentioning that you are a student.
NB: Make sure your passport is valid at least 6 months after your arrival in France, as the time limit on your resident’s permit depends on this.
The conditions of delivery of the visa will be supplied by the Consulate or any other authorised department of the French Embassy in your country of residence (in particular the centre for studies in France).
2. Luggage
Do not bring too much luggage. You may have to pay excess charges. You have to be able to carry your bags on your own.
3. Resident’s permit
Foreign students who come to France to study for longer than three months are required to have a resident’s permit mentioning their student status. A long stay student visa can replace the resident’s permit at the beginning of the stay in France.
Foreign students staying longer than 3 months must have a resident’s permit unless they are members of the European Union. Once in France with a long stay student visa, students may apply for a resident’s permit.
A temporary resident’s permit is granted for the duration of the validity of the student’s passport. Temporary permits cannot exceed the study period and are granted for a maximum of 1 year. Temporary permits are renewable. When student resident’s permit renewal applications are reviewed, “students” conscientiousness will be taken into account.
The “n+i” network partners (French teaching centres, schools) will help you apply for your permit.
Once you have passed your Master’s degree you will be granted a 6 month work permit should you wish to seek employment in France. If you are employed, this may be extended to several years.
4. Social security
As a student in France, you are covered by social security, just like a French student. The “n+i” package also includes civil responsibility and repatriation insurance for the first few months. When you enrol in September, you may also take out supplementary health insurance in the form of a “mutuelle”.
5. Allowances
In certain conditions you may be eligible for housing allowance such as APL. Authorities and your “n+i” tutors can help you with your application.
6. Bank account
Thanks to the “n+i” network, you can open a bank account as soon as you arrive in France. The “n+i” network recommends our partner bank, Société Générale which offers special services for “n+i” students.
